At least 88 people have died in a plane crash in Phuket, Thailand, and the Foreign Office has confirmed Britons were on board.

It is thought that 42 people managed to survive as the plane broke up on the runway and burst into flames.

Reports suggest that eight Britons are among the injured. The Foreign Office said they were urgently trying to establish how many British nationals were involved.

The British ambassador to Thailand, Quinton Quayle, said: "We do hear that there may be British casualties amongst the dead and wounded.

"I can't say more than that, other than that we have our Honorary Consul who is actually on the spot at the moment and then going to the hospital to check on the whereabouts of any Brits that may be on the plane.

"Our concern at the moment is with the welfare of the British passengers and their families and that is our top priority to establish the facts and look after them."

The plane - operated by the "One-Two-Go" budget airline - was flying from the Thai capital, Bangkok, to the resort island - when it veered off course in heavy rain.

A spokesman for Orient Thai Airlines could not give any details about the number or identity of any British passengers on board the flight. In a recorded statement, One Two Go said: "One Two Go Airlines is deeply sorry for this accident and we will accept all responsibility for the passengers in this situation."
